Young Climate Leadership

The project will investigate how increased participation from children and youth can strengthen municipalities' efforts in transitioning to a low-emission society.

Background

As of now, Asker Municipality does not have systematic and comprehensive knowledge of how children and youth use their local areas and their opinions about them. At the same time, there is a need to facilitate relevant cooperation between schools and other parts of the municipality to uphold Democracy and Citizenship as a new interdisciplinary theme in “Kunnskapsløftet 2020”.

About the Project

The project aims to contribute to the transition to a low-emission society through increased participation from children and youth. Children and youth will have a real voice in the development of their local communities in Asker, in line with the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Planning and Building Act.

In schools, the project will be part of Democracy and Citizenship. Additionally, it is highly relevant for other interdisciplinary themes in schools: sustainable development, life skills, and public health. Therefore, this project will benefit both planning authorities and schools.

The project will use participatory design, interviews, and workshops, and experiment with platforms for co-creation and dialogue. We will facilitate a process where the Youth Council and the Youth Municipal Council can express how they wish to participate in implementing the climate plan.

We will test new solutions in connection with urban development in areas that have established community councils and citizen centers (Heggedal, Slemmestad, and Tofte). In this initial phase, we will collaborate with primary schools (school years 5-7).
