Trends in Asian Politics: Populism, Electoralism and Authoritarianism

This ASIANET: fokus talk examines recent political trends in Asian politics, focusing particularly on the intertwined rise of populism, electoralism and authoritarianism.

These trends include the rise of Duterte in the Philippines, the 2018 electoral upset in Malaysia, Cambodia's controversial banning of the political opposition, and the fall-outs of Thailand's controversial 2019 elections. Professor McCargo also discusses the interplay between political protests, election campaigns and media events in the era of social media, where the rules of the political game is being torn up and written anew, both in Asia and around the globe.
