The Rockefeller and Gates Foundations, Past and Present
The Rockefeller Foundation and, more recently, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, have been influential agenda-setters in the global health and nutrition arenas. Panel member Anne-Emanuelle Birn and, her colleague, Judith Richter’s historical comparison concludes that the Gates Foundation’s venture-philanthropy has resulted in extensive private, for-profit influence in global health, leading to a blurring of boundaries between the public and the private and representing a grave threat to democratic global health governance and scientific independence. The authors emphasize the urgency of reversing this trend.
