The Independent Panel on Global Governance for Health is proud to announce the appointment of its new director for the period 2018 to 2020, Professor Sakiko Fukuda-Parr. She succeeds Emeritus Desmond McNeill, to whom we wish the best for his well-deserved retirement.
Sakiko Fukuda-Parr is a development economist, Professor of International Affairs at the New School in New York City. She was a member of the Lancet-University of Oslo Commission on Global Governance for Health of 2014 and was, from 1995 to 2004, the lead author and director of the UNDP Human Development Reports.
I am delighted to be working with colleagues at SUM and members of the Board. It is an honor to lead the effort to build on the momentum of the 2014 Lancet report to promote global health equity by addressing political obstacles, says Fukuda-Parr.
Professor Fukuda-Parr will be joined by Dr Katerini Storeng, who will be the vice-director of the Panel. Storeng is also the coordinator of the research group Power and Politics of Global Health at the Centre for Development and the Environment (SUM), UiO.
Renewed advisory board
The Panel is supported by an advisory board composed of 15 distinguished members from all over the world. We are delighted that Dr. Inger Scheel will chair the advisory board from 2018 to 2020. Inger Scheel directed the Secretariat of the Lancet-UiO Commission, and is currently Senior scientist at the Global Health Department of the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and Associate Professor at the University of Tromsø.
To move forward on the sustainable development agenda, it is key to identify and understand the central role of political determinants of global health equity. I am honoured to contribute to The Panel’s work as Chair of its advisory board, says Scheel.

Save the date: 2018 conference
To maximize its political impact, the Panel will initiate three annual conferences, applying each of the Commission’s conceptual frameworks to a highly political topic. A publication will follow-up each conference with selected papers from speakers.
This year’s conference will be held in Oslo on 1-2 November 2018 and will explore the Political determinants of health inequities and Universal Health Coverage.

With these publications, The Panel aims to deepen and apply the groundbreaking analytical framework developed by the Lancet-University of Oslo Commission on Global Governance for Health. Our ambition is to address the political constraints to achieving health equity, through research and dissemination.
