Welcome to the book launch of "Consumption, Sustainability and Everyday Life" edited by Arve Hansen and Kenneth Bo Nielsen.

About the book

book coverConsumption, Sustainability and Everyday life is written in honour of Hal Wilhite by people who used to work with Hal. The chapters are in different ways inspired by Hal’s pathbreaking work, and engage with the frontiers of research on consumption and sustainability, zooming in on the realms of energy, mobility, wellbeing, and how to make consumption more sustainable.

The book seeks to understand why we consume as we do, how consumption changes, and why we keep consuming more and more, despite the visible damage we are doing to the planet. The chapters cover both the stubbornness of unsustainable consumption patterns in affluent societies and the drivers of rapidly increasing consumption in emerging economies. The book maps out what we know about consumption, questions what we take for granted, and points us in new directions for better understanding—and changing—unsustainable consumption patterns.

The event will start with comments on the book from Pål Strandbakken and Anna Schytte Sigaard, both based at Consumption Research Norway (SIFO), Oslo Metropolitan University, and a panel discussion with the editors, Arve Hansen and Kenneth Bo Nielsen.

Drinks and light snacks will be served.
