hosted at the University of Pretoria from February 12th to 13th, 2024. Partnering as the co-lead institution alongside the University of Pretoria, both universities extended a warm welcome to African and European collaborators for an enriching exchange of ideas.

Throughout the gathering, discussions revolved around CoRE’s foundational pillars, focusing on:

  • Research on political engagement for a just transition.
  • Research on African perspectives on climate adaptation and sustainable development.
  • PhD programme on sustainable societal transformation.

The meeting brought together researchers from the University of Oslo, UCLouvain, and Utrecht University, in collaboration with African counterparts from the University of Pretoria, University of Nairobi, Addis Ababa University, University of Malawi, and Stellenbosch University. Together, they explored avenues for securing funding, coordinating joint activities, and expanding the network.

During the meeting, Stellenbosch University was invited to join the collaboration, further enriching the partnership. Additionally, a comprehensive work plan based on the three core pillars was established for the forthcoming year. The cluster eagerly anticipates embarking on various research and teaching endeavors, marking the beginning of an exciting journey towards sustainable development.

The CoRE on the Politics of Sustainable Development, led by Professor Dan Banik (University of Oslo) and Dr. Heide Hackmann (Director of Future Africa at the University of Pretoria), was inaugurated in September 2023 by The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) and The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities (The Guild). This collaborative effort is set to span a decade, forming one of the 20 clusters initiated by both networks. Over 250 researchers from 60 universities and research institutes are collectively engaged in this endeavor.
