Globalization, political change and changing elites in Latin America

In Latin America, the composition and influence of the elites have been modified at different historical points due to economic changes and political processes. This initiative studies the changes that have occurred in the composition, resources, attitudes, influence and impact on sustainable development of these changes.

About the project

Latin American states, societies and democracies have historically been highly dominated by relatively small elites, mostly of European or other immigrant origin. The composition and influence of the elites have been modified at different historical points due to economic changes (often originating in the international economy) and political processes.

The decades after the turn of the millennium have been characterized by, on the one hand, an intensification of processes of globalization and the rise of new economic actors, and on the other, political processes that have challenged elite-power. This initiative studies the changes that have occurred in the composition, resources, attitudes, influence and impact on sustainable development of these changes.
