Bio-engineering multi-functional silvopastoral landscapes: A case study in Nicaragua.

About the project

This project builds on previous research conducted by the group in Nicaragua and Guatemala. The project aims to gain knowledge on how and why small scale cattle farmers select trees and plants to be used in their farms for improving their livelihoods. The project combines ecological, economic and historical approaches.

Objectives

The main objective is to understand how to bio-engineer multifunction livestock production landscapes in Nicaragua that maximize provisioning of ecosystem services and economically efficient food production at the farm and landscape level.

Financing

The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway.

Cooperation

The project is lead by Graciela Rusch at the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) with the participation of the CATIE in Costa Rica, Høyskolen i Hedmark, and CSIC in Spain.
