Latin America is currently experiencing a boom in the study of elites, much of which aim to understand how and why deep inequalities have been maintained through period of democratic progress and widespread participation. This chapter reviews recent literature. It shows how elites currently emerge from the control of more diverse resources, yet many inequalities remain and deepen.
