Abstract
This article analyzes 207 interviews with public workers in Venezuela about their living conditions, through the lens of state capacity literature. We argue that the Venezuelan bureaucracy has been affected by the loss of the value of wages and the dependence on extra-salary remunerations. We evidence the reduction and deterioration of the provision of services in the institutions, the reduction of social security benefits and the decline in professional training of workers.
