In recent years, so-called “illiberal democracies” have emerged in Europe, and several Asian countries are reportedly becoming more authoritarian. While some countries in Africa and South America have witnessed coups and/or protests, others have held democratic elections with varying degrees of success. Democracies around the world are under pressure, and liberal values are being challenged both in the Global North and the Global South. Are there reasons to be concerned for the state of democracy in the world today?
